New firmware images can be tested without saving it to disk by temporarily running it from memory. If the evaluation fails, you will not have to reinstall your previous firmware. Instead, you can quickly revert to your existing firmware by rebooting the FortiMail unit.
This recipe details how to test new firmware images.
Connecting the Unit
Before beginning the procedure you’ll need to connect to the FortiMail unit.
- Connect your computer to the FortiMail console port using a RJ-45 to DB-9 serial cable or a null-modem cable.
- Initiate a connection between your computer and the CLI of the FortiMail unit.
- Connect port1 of the FortMail unit to the same subnet as a TFTP server.
Testing in the CLI
- Copy the new firmware image file to the root directory of the TFTP server.
- Verify the connection by entering the following command into the FortiMail CLI:
executre ping 192.168.1.168
184.108.40.206 is the address of the TFTP server.
- Restart the FortiMail unit with the following command:
- Press any key to interrupt the system startup and then press G. Follow the onscreen instructions.
- Verify that the new firmware image is loaded by logging in to the CLI and typing:
get system status
If the new firmware image is operating, install it to disk by following the “Installing firmware” procedure on page 648 of the FortiMail Administrator Guide. If it does not operate, reboot the FortiMail unit to discard the temporary firmware and resume operation using the existing firmware.
